ARTINDALE, Frederick Henry Born 1904 Shanghai China, Worked circa. 1949-1970 Los Angeles & San Luis Obispo, California USA. Interned by Japan during World War II. Made a violin whilst in the camp, subsequently known as the ‘Prison Artindale’. Established in Los Angeles from 1949, moving to San Luis Obispo 1960. Stradivari and Guarneri models using orange commercial oil varnish. 35 violins, five violas and one cello. Branded above endpin. Instruments made after 1966 have an ‘A’ carved on the pegbox heel.
