John Dilworth

RECALDINI, Zuann Born 1621, died 1697 Venice Italy. Recorded as a musician and violin and bass maker working at the sign ‘Al Basso’ from c.1644. From 1694 he is described as a harpsichord maker, as was his son Paolo. Two small-sized violoni in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels. Both flat-backed with canted upper bouts, five-strings; one with a violin-like head but with an extra complete turn to the volute, the other with a flat sided head and pegbox with incised volute, in the style of Ciciliano. Very developed violin form ‘f’ soundholes, with large, outswinging lower part.
