Questions people ask about selling at auction
How do I sell my violin at auction with Amati?
Start with a free valuation, online from photographs, by video call or at a valuation day. Our specialist gives you an estimate and recommends the right sale. If you go ahead, you sign a consignment form, we photograph your instrument in 360° and it goes into an online catalogue that is live for ten days before the sale ends.
What does it cost to sell?
Our standard seller’s commission is 20% + VAT of the hammer price. Loss & Damage cover is optional, at 1.5% + VAT of the hammer price. For higher-value instruments we are happy to discuss terms.
When will I be paid?
By bank transfer, 35 working days after the auction. UK clients can have a sterling cheque instead.
What happens if my instrument doesn’t sell?
We will suggest new, usually slightly lower, estimates and a new sale date. Many of our auctions sell 90% of their lots, and instruments that don’t sell on the day often find a buyer in the Aftersales.
Do I need to bring my instrument to London?
No. You can consign at a valuation day, and our specialists will carry it safely back to the office. Or send it by post or courier. We can also arrange collection from your home.
How often are the auctions?
Almost every month, from student instruments to the finest Italian work.
