SQUIER, Jerome Bonaparte Born 1838 Cleveland, Ohio, Worked from 1881, died 1912 Boston, Massachusetts USA. Farmer and shoemaker. Active violin maker in Lewiston. Established in Boston 1881. Particularly interested in varnish research from 1892, resulting in his own amber-oil varnish in a full range of colours. 600 instruments made on classical Italian models. Excellent workmanship and materials. Many instruments assigned names: a celebrated set of twelve given the titles of the Apostles. One of the most influential American makers of his period.
