Juliet Barker

Maker Overview

Juliet Barker (1934–2022) was a British violin maker, viola maker, teacher, and author based in Cambridge, England. She studied at the Bavarian State School of Violin Making in Mittenwald, Germany, beginning in 1954, and qualified as a journeyman violin maker in 1956. After returning to Cambridge, she established her own workshop making and repairing stringed instruments. In 1960 she began teaching violin making at Cambridgeshire Technical College, later Anglia Ruskin University, where her classes developed into the Cambridge Violin Makers workshop and courses. Barker specialised particularly in violas and published the instructional book Violin Making: A Practical Guide. She was appointed MBE in 2005 for services to music and violin making.
