Ian Highfield

Ian Highfield (1946–2012) was a British violin maker and restorer known for his highly detailed “bench copies” of classical Italian and English instruments. With a background in fine art, he brought a strong aesthetic and observational approach to violin making, producing instruments noted for their precision, character, and faithful interpretation of historic models.

Much of Highfield’s work focused on close study and reproduction of instruments from the Cremonese and later English traditions, combined with extensive experimentation in varnish, grounds, and pigments. His output includes violins, violas, cellos, and double basses, many of which were made in small workshop settings over a career spanning several decades.

Highfield’s instruments are regarded for their careful craftsmanship and research-led approach to copy work, and they continue to be played by advanced students and professional musicians. He is remembered as a respected figure within contemporary British violin making.
