Caussin Workshop

Caussin Family was a prominent French violin-making dynasty based in Neufchâteau, Vosges, during the 19th century. The family was founded in violin making by François Caussin (1794–1866), who trained under Jules Gaillard in Mirecourt before establishing his own workshop. He became known for finely crafted instruments inspired by the great Italian masters, particularly Amati, Stradivari, Guarneri, Ruggeri, and Serafin.

François Caussin was succeeded by his sons Nicolas Caussin (1818–1889) and François-Hippolyte Caussin (1830–1898), who continued the family workshop. The Caussins specialised in high-quality copies of classical Italian instruments, with François-Hippolyte in particular becoming recognised for his refined workmanship and successful interpretations of old Italian models.

The Caussin workshop became associated with a distinctive style of French antiqued violin making. Many instruments were produced in the family workshop or by associated makers following Caussin models, leading to the broader designation “Caussin School.” Their instruments remain valued examples of the 19th-century Mirecourt tradition.
