William Harry Moennig III (1930–2004)

American violin maker, restorer, dealer and connoisseur. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the third generation of the distinguished Moennig family associated with the firm William Moennig & Son, one of the most influential violin houses in the United States. He entered the family business in the late 1940s and received extensive training in Europe, studying violin making in Mittenwald and Mirecourt before pursuing advanced restoration and connoisseurship studies in Geneva, Amsterdam and London.

Moennig worked primarily as a maker and restorer of fine stringed instruments and became widely respected for his exceptional technical skill and discerning eye. In 1975 he succeeded his father, William H. Moennig Jr., as head of the family firm and directed the business during a period when it was internationally recognised for dealing in important Italian, French, English and German instruments. Under his leadership the shop maintained close associations with leading soloists, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Curtis Institute of Music.

In addition to his work in the violin trade, Moennig played an important role in American violin-making organisations. He was a founding member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and later served as its president. His reputation rested not only on his craftsmanship and restoration work, but also on his authority in matters of attribution and authenticity.
