Maker Overview
Life
The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan, produced a limited range of violins and other bowed string instruments during the twentieth century. Unlike Gibson’s famous mandolins and guitars, violin production was a relatively small part of the company’s output and consisted mainly of factory-made student and intermediate instruments for the American market. Gibson violins represent the development of large-scale American instrument manufacturing and the adaptation of traditional European violin designs for modern production.
