John Dilworth

HOING, Clifford A. Born 1903, died 1989 High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire UK. Trained as a wood carver and worked with Eric Gill before taking up violin making in 1935. Guarneri del Gesù ‘Vieuxtemps’ violin and Stradivari ‘Messie’ violin as models. Fine workmanship and materials. Own oil varnish, golden to dark red-brown. Personal viola model plans of which were widely distributed for the benefit of other makers. Diploma of Honour at The Hague 1949. Signed internally. Branded on top block: ‘C. A. Hoing‘.
