HUME, Charles Darley Born 1865 West Hartlepool, Durham UK, Worked circa. 1890-1918 Melbourne Australia. Trained in Manchester and with Bela Szepessy in London. Active from 1883 in Liverpool; then emigrated to Australia 1889. Established in Hawthorn, Melbourne at first as a musician, but resuming violin making 1897. Completed about 59 instruments, generally on a personal model. Gold medal and certificates of merit awarded at Melbourne and other exhibitions. Most instruments named after a particular virtuoso; ‘Kubelik’, ‘Marie Hall’, ‘Melba’, ‘Verbrugghen’, etc. Red brown varnish. Also made several bows, but ceased in 1918. Gold Medal Melb.
