John Dilworth

LOTT, John Frederick (I) Born 1776, died 1853 London UK. Associated with B. S. Fendt with whom he worked for Thomas Dodd 1798-1834. Subsequently established his own business in King Street, Seven Dials 1835. In 1851 he was living at 24 St Anne’s Court, Soho. Especially well-known for his double basses. Regarded as one of the finest English makers of the instrument. Violins and violas are uncommon as many were made for Dodd and are not easily identifiable. Generally fine Stradivari or Amati copies, although the varnish can be rather thin and poor. J. F. Lott / Maker / London 18.. [BVMA]
