Maker Overview

Life

German violin maker who established a workshop in Mittenwald in 1926. Born in Gossengrün, he worked in the Bohemian and Bavarian violin-making centres of Schönbach, Brünn and Mittenwald. His Mittenwald workshop produced individually made violins in the German tradition and became the foundation of the later Leonhardt violin-making business. In 1968 the workshop passed to his son-in-law, Wilfried Leonhardt. Dietl’s instruments are known from the 1920s through the 1950s and include finely crafted violins based on traditional German and Italian models.
