Maker Overview
Vicente (Eusebio) Assensio (Sáez) was a Spanish violin maker, scientist, and inventor. He was born on December 15, 1730, in Fuentelaencina, a town near Madrid. He is presumed to have died around 1798. Assensio was a craftsman and scientist who worked in the canons of the Enlightenment. He was a violin maker and repairer, as well as an optician and astronomer for Prince Charles IV of Spain. He also invented a seed drill and a lathe for winding strings.
Assensio’s output of instruments was small, with his last known instrument dating from 1791 and numbered only 31. His instruments are rare today. He was familiar with Cremonese instruments but his work was an interpretation rather than a direct copy, combining elements of Amati and Stainer with some of his own ideas. His violins are distinctively branded with the letters “AV” (with the V superimposed over the A) on the button.
