BARTON, John Worked circa. 1775-1810 London UK. Brother of George Barton, above. 40 Shoe Lane, Fleet Street c.1775-1791; 26 Ship Yard, Temple Bar, 1791- c.1810. Supplied instruments to C. & S. Thompson and Preston. Trade work, some of higher ambition and Amatisé model but mostly in a rather inflated Stainer manner. Generally poor varnish; better efforts of golden-brown colour, but frequently the usual London dull, intransparent brown. Manuscript label: Made by / John Barton / 1787
