BERNARD, James Born 1865 Springfield, near Cupar, Scotland UK. Hairdresser, musician, and amateur maker from 1922. Produced about twelve instruments, influenced by W. J. Farrell, Guarneri-derived model. Early work varnished dark red-brown; after 1929 made use of commercial preparation of Harris, providing a lighter colour. Modest materials.
