BERTOLOTTI, Francesco Born 1565, died 1614 Brescia Italy. Son and pupil of Gasparo da Salò, below. Assisted his father and was joined in 1598 by Gio. Paolo Maggini, who rather overshadowed him. After Gasparo’s death in 1609, he continued to work for a short time with Maggini in the family workshop, but seems to have lost interest in instrument making, devoting most of his time to the managing of the family estates for the remainder of his life. Very little work is attributed to him directly; one lira da gamba in the Cologne Musikhistorisches Museum bears a dated label of 1612. A fine Brescian back attached to a composite viola carries what appears to be an authentic label, although barely legible: E. Francesco q. Gaspar da Salo / fece in Brescia [Brescia catalogue 2008]
