John Dilworth

BUCHENBERG, Matteo Born 1568 Pfarre Rosshaupten, Southern Allgäu Germany, Worked circa. 1591-1628 Rome Italy. One of the most celebrated lute makers of that period. Son-in-law of Pietro Alberti and took over what had probably been his workshop in Via dei leutari 1599. Chitarrones, arch lutes etc. in ex-Victoria & Albert Museum collection, now in the Horniman Museum, London. Label: Brussels and the Hague. Branded: ‘M.B’ Label: Matheus Bucchenberg / Roma 1619.

Cecie Stainer

German by birth, but lived in Rome about 1597-1620. Was one of the most celebrated Italian lute makers. A chitarone is dated Rome, 1614; in an arch-lute is the label: “Matheus Bucchenberg, Roma, 1619.”

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff

Der Name kommt in allerlei entstellten Formen vor: Buckenberg, Buechtenberg
und Italienisch sogar Matteo Boccaber. Er selbst schrieb sich Bucchenberg;
in Urkunden heisst er manchmal auch Bucherberg (1606). Er war deutscher
Abkunft und ein berühmter Lautenmacher. Baron schreibt von ihm: »Man hat
die vortrefflichsten Theorben von ihm, die nur zu finden seyn. e. g. Oval rund,
