BUCK, Richard John Born 1871 Newport, Essex UK. Pupil of George Pyne 1890-1900. Emigrated to Australia 1906, and settled in Melbourne, at first as a plumber but resumed violin making in 1920. Made about a dozen instruments in the following five years. Stradivari and Guarneri models exhibiting good workmanship. Used his own amber varnish, but later turned to commercially produced mixtures sold by Angell of Bristol. Inscribed on interior of back: R. J. Buck. Maker / 477 Drummond Street / Carlton. Melbourne, 1924. R. J. Buck / Violin Maker/ Melbourne Victoria Australia. 1925.
