Carl Heinrich Knopf
KNOPF, Carl Heinrich (1839–1875) German bow maker of the Markneukirchen school. Son of Karl Wilhelm Knopf and member of the celebrated Knopf family of bow makers. Trained by his uncle Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Knopf and later worked with Ludwig Bausch in Leipzig before returning to Markneukirchen, where he succeeded his father in 1860. He produced fine violin, viola and cello bows and supplied leading firms including Bausch, Weichold and Kittel. Later based in Dresden and Berlin, he became one of the outstanding German bow makers of the nineteenth century. His bows are recognised for their refined workmanship, excellent materials and strong musical qualities.
