CERNY, Jan Born 1883, died 1962 Prague Czech Republic. Self taught violin maker, active c.1922-1950. Inventor of a new form of violin with soundholes placed in the middle ribs and bass bar and sound post replaced with his own patented devices. Won gold medals at Prague 1924, Brünn 1928, and The Hague 1949. Also made conventional violins of Stradivari form.
