John Dilworth
DEVEREUX, John Worked circa. 1850-1864 London UK, died 1920 Fitzroy Australia. Worked for Bernard Simon Fendt. Emigrated to Fitzroy, Australia 1864, attracted by the gold rush of the time (according to the Hill Archive). Continued making instruments there at his shop in Marion Street. Chiefly valued for cellos and double basses (he played the bass professionally); his violins are rather oversized. Obvious Fendt influences in workmanship and style; classical models with flat arch, and good oil varnish. J. Devereux / Violin and Double Bass Maker / Marion St. Fitzroy 1867
