Well-finished work, neat scrolls, and good golden brown varnish. Violas very useful size and worthy instruments. Also known for richly ornamented viola d’amores. A violin and lute maker in Klingenthal, Saxony, in 1743. In a viola d’amore, with twelve strings, yellow varnish, is the label: “Johann Andreas Dorffel, Violin und Lautenmacher, in Klingenthal, 1743.’

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff

Otto sagt von ihm, dass er weniger Sorgfalt auf das Äussere verwendete,
aber doch recht gute Instrumente baute und seiner Zeit als einer der besten
Bassmacher galt, was auch de Piccolellis wiederholt. Valdrighi gibt dagegen
seinen Arbeiten das Pradicat: »ordinarissimo«. Dass ein Dörfel oder Dürfel je
in Altenburg ansässig war, liess sich leider actenmässig nicht feststellen. Er ist wahrscheinlich identisch mit Hans Andreas D. in Klingenthal und hat sich nur vorübergehend in Altenburg aufgehalten.
