John Dilworth
EURY, Jacob Born 1765 Mirecourt, died 1848, Versailles France. Bow maker. Son and pupil of François Eury. Called up for military service 1784-1792. Settled afterward in Paris. Made the acquaintance of F. Tourte who was a specially strong influence on his work. Established at 24 rue de Thionville in 1811, at 20 rue des Lyonnais 1812, and in 1819 at 27 rue Croix des Petits Champs where it is assumed he was associated with his neighbour Koliker. In 1820 he was at 12 rue de Billy and in 1822 at rue de la Clef. It is this period up to his retirement in 1848 from which his best work comes. Round and octagonal sticks. His heads uniquely have a flat chamfer up to the tip. Early frogs with a rounded heel and protective curved silver plate. Branded: ‘J. EURY’
