FRITZ, Johann Born 1783 Pfaffenhofen, died 1825 Innsbruck Austria. Originally trained as a wood carver. Later apprenticed to the organ builder G. Gröber in Innsbruck. Made all sorts of musical instruments, including all violin family in typical Tyrolean forms. Good transparent varnish. Violas rather small, but attractive cellos sometimes using fruitwood for the backs. Johann Fritz / Geigen und Chitarmacher / in Innsbruck, 1821
