John Dilworth
GAUD, Philippe Born 1905 Venice Italy, Worked from 1954 New York USA. Moved with family to Nice, before trying apprenticeship at sea and then as a student of architecture. Later became acquainted with a luthier Pierre Rossi with whom he learnt violin making. Emigrated to New York 1954, where he established a workshop and remained active until the 1960s. Fine work on Stradivari model; in particular the ‘Sarasate’ violin in the Paris Conservatoire collection (Musée de la Musique). Excellent materials and workmanship.
