Biographies
John Dilworth
GAULARD, François Jude Born 1787 Mirecourt, died 1857 Troyes France. Bow maker. Son of Louis Gaulard, below. Early work suggests the influence of Pajeot. From 1855 worked in Troyes with his son Louis Auguste, below. Prolific output, using pernambuco, ironwood, snakewood, and other coarser imported hardwoods. Silver or gold mounted, sometimes open frogs, ivory frogs with rear face double fluted, with deeply incised central groove. Branded: ‘GAULARD. M’, later ‘GAULARD’ [Millant/Raffin]
