SOLAR, Fernando González (1921–2011)
Spanish violin and guitar maker. Born in Asturias, Spain, Fernando González Solar moved to Madrid in 1943, where he trained under the renowned guitar maker Santos Hernández. Initially specialising in guitar making, he later expanded his work to include violins, violas, cellos and bows.

In 1948 he established his own workshop in Madrid and became one of the leading Spanish makers of the 20th century. His instruments were strongly influenced by the classical Italian tradition, particularly the models of Antonio Stradivari, and are noted for their careful workmanship, elegant proportions and distinctive golden varnish.

Solar was appointed luthier to the Spanish Royal Court and was involved in the care and maintenance of the celebrated Stradivari instruments preserved in the Royal Palace of Madrid. His work gained international recognition, and his workshop produced instruments for many professional musicians.

Alongside his bowed instruments, Solar remained highly respected as a guitar maker. His family continued his instrument-making tradition after his death, preserving the legacy of one of Spain’s most significant modern luthiers.
