Er erlernte in Liverpool bei Oliver & Davies den Clavierbau und verlegte
sich dabei frühzeitig auf die Geigenmacherei und wurde von dem Geigenhändler
Archer als Reparateur beschäftigt. 1883 wanderte er nach Canada aus und
konnte bereits 1884 eine Anzahl selbstgefertigter Geigen ausstellen. 1885 zog
er nach Boston, arbeitete bei O. Weemann über zwei Jahre lang und eröffnete
1889 seine eigene Werkstatt.
