HAMBURG, George Born 1872 Russia, d. after 1916 New York USA. Emigrated to America 1894; established in Minneapolis. Later worked in Philadelphia and in New York from 1911 until his death. Very skilful maker on Stradivari-derived model. Fine materials and own varnish recipe developed after 1916, providing light golden to dark amber shades. Also bows branded with his name, but these may have been imported. Instruments branded internally: ‘Geo. Hamburg’ Geo. Hamburg Maker / New York / No.. Anno 191..
