HARLEY, B. 19th century London UK. Two craftsmen of this name, father and son, known from a business card reading ‘B. Harley, Son & Successor to the late B. Harley, The Original Musical Instrument and Case Maker, 1, Summer Street, Back Hill, Hatton Garden’ found inside a mahogany double violin case; also inscribed on the reverse ‘made for Mr Davies, Coventry Street, Haymarket, August 1844’. The case contained quarter-sized Stradivari and Guarneri violins, acquired and noted by Alfred Hill . Vannes cites a cittern labelled: Harley maker / Wych Street London 1805 [Hill Archive]
