HEBERLEIN, Conrad Born 1878 Markneukirchen Germany, d. after 1942, St Louis, Missouri USA. Apprenticed to E. Schmidt in Markneukirchen. Worked for his uncle, H. T. Heberlein and Richard Weichold in Dresden, and for Neuner & Hornsteiner in Berlin. Emigrated to the USA 1903 to work for Julius Gutter in Philadelphia, then for R. Pelz in Chicago 1909-1934, and finally settled in St. Louis c.1939. Produced over 100 violins, violas, and cellos. Guarneri and occasional Stradivari models. Shaded oil varnish. Branded internally and on lower block.
