Maker Overview
The Hopf family were a large German dynasty of violin makers centred in Klingenthal, Saxony, active from the late 17th century onward. The first documented maker of the family was Caspar Hopf, who established the family tradition and is regarded as one of the founding figures of violin making in Klingenthal. Later generations of the family continued the craft for more than two centuries, producing violins, violas, and cellos in what became known as the “Hopf model,” characterised by broad, square outlines and distinctive arching.
Among the best-known makers of the family are David Hopf and several later descendants working in Klingenthal. Historical research identifies more than eighteen, and possibly over forty, violin makers connected with the Hopf dynasty across multiple generations.
