He trained in Bubenreuth, one of Germany’s principal centres of violin making, and established his own workshop after qualifying as a Geigenbaumeister (Master Violin Maker). He builds violins, violas, and cellos, and also undertakes restoration and repair work.

Klier received the Gold Medal for violin at the Third German Violin Making Competition of the Georg Hesse Foundation in 1986. In 1989 he was awarded the honorary prize of the Associazione Liutaria Italiana “Cremona” at the International Violin Making Competition in Mittenwald.
