Justin Victor & Paul François Diter
Following Justin’s withdrawal from active business, Paul continued the firm and entered into partnership with Paul Lorange in 1927. The business subsequently became known as Diter & Lorange. Paul retired in 1933, leaving the workshop to Lorange.

DITER, Justin Victor & Paul François
French family of violin and bow makers active in Lyon and Marseille. Justin Victor Diter (1866–1941) trained with Paul Bailly in Mirecourt and worked for Paul Blanchard in Lyon before establishing his own workshop. He moved to Marseille in 1897 and was joined by his brother Paul François Diter (1879–1942) in 1901.
Paul François trained as a bow maker under Charles Nicolas Bazin, while Justin specialised principally in violin making. The brothers worked together in Marseille under the name Diter Frères, producing violins, violas, cellos and bows. Instruments were labelled “J. and P. Diter, Luthiers à Marseille” and were made in the French tradition, with Justin’s instruments particularly influenced by Vuillaume and classical Cremonese models.
