Maker Overview

Life

Kurt Dolling (1909–1990) was a German bow maker from Erlbach in Saxony, Germany. He trained in several established workshops in the Markneukirchen region, including those of C. A. Hoyer and Emil Max Penzel, before completing his master certification in bow making in 1939. After the Second World War and his return from captivity, he established his own workshop in Erlbach in 1949, where he worked for the rest of his career.

He is known primarily for handmade violin, viola, and cello bows made in the traditional German bow-making style. His bows are typically stamped “Kurt Dolling” and appear regularly in trade and auction records, with examples dating mainly from the mid-20th century.
