Francis Kuttner
San Francisco
Francis Kuttner (1951–2023) was a master American violin maker trained in Cremona, Italy. He built award-winning violins, violas, and cellos inspired by classical Italian models, earning international acclaim and “Hors Concours” status from the Violin Society of America. His most famous commission was the Ellen M. Egger Quartet, played by the Alexander String Quartet. Beyond his craftsmanship, he was a generous mentor and teacher, with a legacy now carried forward through a memorial fund supporting young luthiers.
