Established in St Louis and later assisted by his son John. Fine workmanship on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Guadagnini models. Golden-yellow to deep red spirit varnish. Also made several bows. Claimed to be able to make one violin per week; more than 250 recorded. Many instruments by unrelated makers had copies of his label inserted to capitalise on his success.
