John Dilworth

LYON, George W. Worked from 1864 Chicago, Illinois USA. Founder of Lyon & Healy, a general music shop, in partnership with Patrick J. Healy 1864. Financed by Oliver Ditson of Boston. The violin department operated from 1888 to 1967 employing many distinguished craftsmen. Annual catalogues Lyon & Healy Rare Old Violins are a valuable archive of fine instruments, published 1890-1925. Similarly the Hawley Collection of Violins (1904) is a collectible edition and important source book. The shop also distributed the Whitelaw violin varnish made by James Whitelaw in Glasgow, popular with many early 20th century makers. [Wenberg]
