Biographies

John Dilworth

MARCELLI, Giovanni Antonio c.1690-1702 Cremona Italy. Cited in most sources but not supported by any known historical research. Henley gives an elaborate description of fine work, sometimes with extra decorative purfling and carved heads; violins, cellos, and double basses. Vannes restricts his opinion to good violins with yellow-orange varnish; large model cellos with fine purfling. No authenticated examples currently known. Probably a concocted name. Joannes Marcelli / Fecit Cremonae / MDCXCVI
