MERRIL, Albert H. Born 1853 Elgin, Illinois, d. after 1935 Portand, Oregon USA. Pupil of Hermann Macklett. Worked for a piano maker but from 1877 resumed violin repair work for Jacob Richter in Chicago. Established independently in Atlanta, Georgia 1893-1905. After a brief retirement moved to Portland, Oregon 1915 and opened another shop. Author of Master Violins (Portland, 1930). Classical Italian models and a personal design drawing on both Maggini and Guarneri. Rustic workmanship with local materials and own amber oil varnish.
