John Dilworth

MOGLIE, Albert Ferdinando Born 1890 Rome Italy, died 1983 Washington D.C. USA. Pupil of Antonio Sgarbi 1920-1907 and completed his first instrument 1908. Worked for Luigi Enbergher, mandolin maker; subsequently for Rudolpho Fredi and Giuseppe Rossi. Also worked in Paris for Hippolyte Silvestre before moving to Milan to work for Leandro Bisiach. Appointed luthier to the Constanzi Opera House, Augusteum Symphony Orchestra, and the Conservatoire. Emigrated to the USA in 1914 to work for Rudolf Wurlitzer in Cincinnati, moving to the New York branch 1917. Established independently in New York 1917. Transferred to Washington 1922. Finished last instrument in 1936 but continued working until at least 1985. Given responsibility for the instrument collection of the Library of Congress from 1931. Renowned as a restorer and repairer, but also made over 100 violins, six violas, and three cellos; mostly reproductions of individual classical Italian instruments.
