Per S. Ovesen

Life

Ovesen trained at the Newark School of Violin Making in England, graduating in 1986. During his studies he was awarded a Certificate of Distinction for Tonal Qualities in the cello category of the Facta Britanica competitions. Following his training, he joined the distinguished London firm of J. P. Guivier, where he worked in the repair and restoration of fine stringed instruments.

He subsequently spent approximately five years in Japan as workshop manager for a leading Japanese company, working closely with professional musicians and members of major symphony orchestras. His responsibilities included repairs, sound adjustment and major restoration work.

In 1990 he established Per S. Ovesen – Rare Violins, dealing in fine violins, violas, cellos and bows, as well as providing appraisal and collection services. In Denmark he also operated as a violin maker, with his business registered in Aarhus from 1993.

In 2004 Ovesen relocated his workshop to Singapore, where he concentrated principally on the making of new violins, violas and cellos. His instruments are inspired by the classical Italian tradition and include both detailed reproductions of historic models and his own standard designs. His instruments have found their way to musicians and collectors in Denmark, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia and elsewhere.

Ovesen has been included among notable contemporary violin makers in Contemporary Violin Makers, published by Jost Thöne. His work reflects a combination of traditional Cremonese-inspired modelling, practical experience in restoration, and an international career serving professional players and collectors.

In January 2026, Ovesen relocated his workshop from Singapore to Hokkaido, Japan, where he continues his work as a maker of violins, violas and cellos.
