John Dilworth
REINDAHL, Knute Born 1857 Mo Norway, Worked from 1870 Chicago, Illinois & Madison, Wisconsin USA. Self-taught violin and bow maker, active from 1867. Emigrated to the USA 1870. Established in Chicago 1885. Moved to Madison, Wisconsin 1910. Active until after 1933. Appointed President of the American Guild of Violin Makers. Diploma of merit at the Columbian Exhibition 1893, and gold medal at the Paris Exposition 1900. Over 600 violins, 20 violas, and 20 cellos completed. Stradivari and personal models designated ‘Reindahl Grand’ and ‘Tadellos’. Very fine workmanship with some eccentricities: several with intricate inlay work and carved heads. Bows on Tourte and other models. Idiosyncratic ornamentation on the fittings. Knute Reindahl / Madison. Wis.
