ROBINSON, William Joseph Born 1880 Avebury, Wiltshire, died 1960 Abbey Wood, London UK. Trained as a saddle maker. Self-taught in violin maker from 1910 in Plumstead, south London. Advised by Dykes & Sons. Prolific and distinguished craftsman. Completed about 400 violins, 40 violas, and 16 cellos. Early work on large Amati or Stradivari model; later and better instruments on Guarneri patterns. Fine materials. Good golden brown varnish. William Robinson / Plumstead. London. / A.D. 19.. / No..
