ROPE, Alfred James Born 1862 Norwich, Worked circa. 1890-1930 London UK. Self-taught violin maker from 1890, whilst still a soldier in Aldershot Barracks. Resident in Woolwich 1927. Over 200 instruments on Stradivari- or Guarneri-derived models, including violas and cellos. Coarse work. Oil varnish of various shades.
