Biographies

John Dilworth

ROSSI, Giuseppe Born 1869 Florence, died 1954 Rome Italy. Lived in Citadella, Padua, and studied at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. Subsequently moved to Rome and developed an interest in violin making. Established in Albano Laziale, Rome. Worked on Cremonese, Neapolitan, and Venetian models using golden-red spirit varnish. Awarded several medals: Padua 1893, Livorno 1908, and at the Santa Cecilia competitions in Rome 1915-1918. Appointed luthier to the Royal Musical Institute of Santa Cecilia and the Royal Conservatoire. An important figure in violin making in Rome in the early 20th century. Credited with over 600 instruments, including viols, cellos, and double basses.
