John Dilworth

ROST, Franz Georg Born 1869 Jöhstadt Germany, d.c.1960 London UK. Apprenticed to August Voigt in Markneukirchen 1883-1886. Worked for Paulus in Leipzig, Hammig in Dresden, Louis Otto in Düsseldorf, Laumann in Budapest, and Zimmermann in Leipzig. Established own workshop in London 1903-1922, before moving to New York to work for Wurlitzer 1923-1928, living in Astoria, Long Island. Returned to London in 1928, working in Lexington Street. Stradivari and Guarneri models. Fine workmanship. Orange to dark red soft oil varnish of his own making. Manuscript labels: Franz Georg Rost / 13 Amery Row, Brook St. / No. 6.
