Maker Overview
Manlio Rovescalli (1904–1945) was an Italian violin maker, son and pupil of Azzo Rovescalli. Born in Cremona, he worked in the Lombardy tradition, producing violins, violas, and guitars in Cremona, Milan, and Lodi. His instruments are typically made on a small pattern with dark red varnish and reflect the influence of the Antoniazzi school through his father’s training and work.
Rovescalli’s labels are usually found as “Manlio Rovescalli / Figlio / fece nel 19..”. His surviving instruments are valued for their connection to the early 20th-century Italian revival of classical violin making.
