SAMPSON, H. S. Born 1891 Maldon, Essex UK, Worked from 1909 Melbourne Australia. Worked for various British makers and dealers until 1908. Emigrated to Australia 1909, and worked for A. E. Smith in Melbourne. Later established independently as repairer and maker. About 30 violins completed on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Gagliano models. Strong accurate and attractive work. Made his own successful oil varnish. Various shades of orange-brown. Branded: ‘H.S.S’. Printed label: Made by / H. S. Sampson / Melbourne / 1924
